Description
Posterior to the auricle, the occipital vein is traced within the superficial tissues of the occipital scalp and nuchal region of an adult male, receiving small venules from the posterior scalp before descending inferiorly toward the upper neck. Its course is shown in relation to the occipital artery and adjacent superficial veins, with deeper context from the red-stained musculature of the suboccipital and posterior cervical regions. Yellow-highlighted cutaneous nerves along the posterior scalp and upper neck, and green lymphatic channels with occipital lymph nodes near the mastoid and superior nuchal line, help orient the vessel within the layered anatomy. Spatially, the occipital vein lies posterior and superior to the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid, superficial to the splenius capitis and the fascial roof of the suboccipital triangle.
