Description
Arising from the ventral rami of C3 and C4 within the cervical plexus, the supraclavicular nerve is traced as it emerges at the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid (Erb point) and descends inferiorly toward the clavicle. Superficial branches fan out over the superior anterior chest and shoulder, crossing the clavicle to supply cutaneous innervation over the pectoral region and deltoid cap. Nearby landmarks logically included in this shoulder and upper thorax field are the clavicle, pectoralis major, deltoid, and the interval toward the posterior triangle of the neck. Small. Superficial. That surface course is the point. Because the supraclavicular nerves traverse the operative field for clavicular fixation, shoulder arthroscopy portals, and cervical lymph node biopsy, they are a common source of postoperative numbness or painful neuroma when transected or entrapped in scar. Their overlap with the upper thoracic intercostal cutaneous territories also explains why sensory complaints after clavicle fracture or plating can be broader than the incision footprint. This view makes it easier to teach how a cervical plexus cutaneous branch can be at risk in procedures that otherwise feel “orthopedic” rather than “neck” surgery. Use this asset in regional anatomy teaching for medical and PA curricula, in surgical atlases describing the deltopectoral approach or clavicle ORIF, and in patient education materials explaining expected sensory changes over the anterior shoulder and upper chest after incision or trauma.
