Description
Anterior dissection of the male head and neck exposes the facial musculature over the frontal bone, zygomatic bones, maxilla, and mandible, with the frontalis (epicranius) superiorly continuous with the superficial musculoaponeurotic system. Around the orbits, orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissures, while nasalis overlays the nasal cartilages at the midline. Inferior to the zygomatic arch, masseter occupies the lateral ramus of the mandible, and the oral sphincter (orbicularis oris) sits centrally, flanked by zygomaticus major and minor coursing inferomedially toward the modiolus and buccinator forming the muscular wall of the cheek. In the neck, sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid region to the manubrium and medial clavicle, framing the laryngeal region and the anterior triangle. Symmetry reads clearly. This anterior perspective is the workhorse for teaching facial expression anatomy because it ties origin and insertion to surface form: the zygomaticus complex elevates the oral commissure, buccinator compresses the vestibule during mastication, and mentalis everts the lower lip over the mandibular symphysis. It also mirrors clinical thinking in facial nerve mapping, where weakness in orbicularis oculi affects eyelid closure and dysfunction of orbicularis oris contributes to drooling and poor oral competence.
