Description
Rendered in lateral profile, the neurocranium is emphasized as a blue cap overlaying the cranial vault (calvaria) from the frontal bone anteriorly across the parietal region to the occipital bone posteriorly. Along the superior temporal line, the squamous part of the temporal bone forms the inferolateral wall of the braincase, sitting inferior to the parietal bone at the squamosal suture. Posteriorly, the parietal and occipital bones meet at the lambdoid suture, while the coronal suture marks the junction of frontal and parietal bones. Facial contours remain visible beneath the overlay, but the visual priority stays on the braincase rather than the viscerocranium. A lateral neurocranial view is the workhorse for teaching surface landmarks that guide both imaging interpretation and operative planning, because you can relate external contours to underlying sutures and thin regions of bone. The pterion region, just superior and anterior to the external acoustic meatus, matters clinically as the classic site where middle meningeal artery injury can follow temporal bone trauma and lead to epidural hematoma. EEG and other neurophysiologic mapping workflows also start with this kind of head profile, where a fitted cap conceptually links scalp locations to cortical regions. Simple geometry, serious consequences. Use it for neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses, neurosurgery and emergency medicine teaching on cranial trauma patterns, and publisher layouts introducing the skull, calvaria, and lateral cranial landmarks in a patient-specific context.
