Description
Across the cranial vault (neurocranium or braincase), the frontal squama continues posteriorly to the paired parietal bones, meeting at the sagittal suture along the midline from bregma toward lambda. Laterally, the parietal eminences and superior temporal lines mark the transition toward the temporal region, while the coronal suture separates frontal from parietal bone and the lambdoid suture defines the parietal-occipital boundary posteriorly. Surface contours of the skullcap are read in relation to palpable landmarks such as the glabella anteriorly, the vertex superiorly, and the external occipital protuberance and superior nuchal lines inferiorly. For clinical work, neurocranial surface anatomy is a map for both trauma assessment and operative planning, because fractures commonly track along sutures and thin areas, and scalp swelling can obscure deeper injury patterns. Pterion lies anterolateral to the parietal bone where frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid meet, and it overlies the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery, a classic locus for epidural hematoma after temporal impact. Burr hole placement, craniotomy flap design, and interpretation of cephalohematoma versus subgaleal hemorrhage all benefit from a clear mental model of the cranial vault and its layers. Landmarks matter.
