Description

Seen in lateral profile, the occipital lobe occupies the posterior pole of the cerebral hemisphere, tapering toward the occipital pole as it meets the parietal and temporal lobes along the parieto-occipital region and the preoccipital notch. The animation tracks the outer cortical surface, keeping the superior margin near the parietal lobe and the inferior margin continuous with the tentorial surface above the cerebellum. Sulcal relief is presented in sequence, orienting the viewer to lateral occipital gyri and the posterior extent of the superior and inferior temporal sulci as they approach the occipital cortex. Visual cortex anatomy benefits from clean spatial context. Primary visual cortex (V1, striate cortex) lies mainly along the calcarine sulcus on the medial surface, but clinicians localize lesions from lateral landmarks first, then mentally fold inward to the calcarine territory. That matters in stroke and tumor workups: posterior cerebral artery infarcts, occipital metastases, and traumatic contusions at the occipital pole can produce homonymous hemianopia or quadrantanopia, and the animation’s gradual orientation helps connect a lateral cortical location to the expected visual field deficit. Motion clarifies borders. It also reduces common left-right and anterior-posterior reversals when teaching neuroanatomy. Use this clip in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy courses when introducing lobar boundaries, in neurology teaching sets on visual pathway localization, or in radiology and neurosurgery presentations that correlate lateral surface landmarks with MRI and CT findings in the posterior cranial fossa and occipital region. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
