Profiled in lateral aspect, the female head and upper neck are arranged as a layered corridor from the calvaria and facial skeleton to the aerodigestive tract. Cranial bones (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital) and the viscerocranium (maxilla, zygomatic bone, mandible) form the rigid frame, while the masseter and temporalis overlie the ramus and temporal fossa for mastication. Along the anterior neck, the hyoid region and thyroid cartilage sit superior to the trachea, with the pharyngeal airway and oral cavity positioned posterior to the lips, teeth, and tongue. Neurovascular pathways track between these planes, with the common and internal carotid arteries and internal jugular vein running deep to the sternocleidomastoid region, cranial nerve branches coursing toward the orbit, midface, and mandible, and superficial cervical and parotid area lymph nodes marking drainage routes. Clinical teaching benefits from a lateral head view because it preserves depth relationships that are easy to lose in frontal schematics, especially where airway, swallowing, and cervical vessels compete for space in the upper neck. The carotid sheath relationships matter in carotid endarterectomy and central venous access, while the course of the facial nerve through the parotid region provides the surgical mental map for parotidectomy and for localizing Bell palsy versus more proximal lesions.
