Description
Anterior head and upper neck anatomy is rendered with the skin partially transparent, allowing the superficial and deep vasculature and major sensory and motor pathways to read clearly beneath the facial features. The common carotid arteries ascend in the lateral neck and bifurcate near the superior border of the thyroid cartilage into internal and external carotid arteries, with the internal jugular veins running posterolateral within the carotid sheath. Branches of the external carotid system course over the mandible and midface, while the facial nerve (CN VII) emerges from the stylomastoid region and divides into temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches that radiate anteriorly across the parotid area; trigeminal sensory territories (CN V) are suggested by the paired nerve pathways distributed to forehead, cheek, and chin. A few key muscles, including masseter and the suprahyoid and infrahyoid strap muscles, are visible as landmarks in the jaw and anterior neck. Clear orientation. This anterior perspective matters because many high-stakes procedures and injuries track along these same planes: facial lacerations threaten the superficial temporal and facial vessels, parotid surgery and mandibular angle trauma put the marginal mandibular branch of CN VII at risk, and carotid endarterectomy planning depends on understanding the carotid bifurcation and its relationship to the internal jugular vein and adjacent nerves. Anesthesia trainees also rely on this layout when mapping trigeminal nerve blocks and when anticipating zones of sensory loss or motor asymmetry in Bell palsy versus central facial weakness. Use it for head and neck anatomy teaching in medical, dental, and speech-language pathology curricula, and for clinical reference figures in textbooks covering cranial nerves, facial trauma, and vascular access or neck dissection. It also suits patient-facing surgical consent materials where a realistic facial surface must be paired with accurate underlying neurovascular pathways.
