Description
Superimposed over the facial soft tissues, the anterior head and upper neck reveal the common and external carotid arteries ascending deep to the mandible, then branching into the facial, maxillary, and superficial temporal arteries as they course superiorly and laterally across the face and scalp. Blue venous channels trace the facial vein and its connections toward the internal jugular vein, while finer tributaries mirror arterial paths around the orbit, nose, lips, and chin. Yellow neural structures outline sensory territories of the trigeminal nerve (supraorbital, infraorbital, and mental regions) and the motor distribution of the facial nerve radiating from the parotid region, with cervical cutaneous branches spreading inferiorly over the anterior neck. Surface landmarks remain visible through the overlay, orienting the viewer to the orbit, nasal cartilages, oral fissure, and anterior cervical contour. Anterior mapping of facial vessels and nerves matters because most clinically relevant interventions in the head begin at the surface and proceed inward along predictable neurovascular planes. Lacerations crossing the nasolabial fold or mandibular margin can injure the facial artery or marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve, changing bleeding patterns and postoperative symmetry in a way that is not obvious without a layered view. For neck surgery, the relationship of the carotid bifurcation to the angle of the mandible and the internal jugular vein provides a practical reference for carotid endarterectomy exposure and for avoiding cranial nerve injury in the upper cervical field.
