Description
Posterior anatomy of an adult female is rendered with a semi-transparent integument, allowing the cranial cavity and upper cervical region to read through the surface contour and hairline. Superiorly, the cerebrum is visible with identifiable frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes, and a mapped vascular network coursing over the convexity toward the midline venous sinuses. Inferior to the occiput, the posterior neck dissects cleanly into layered musculature, with trapezius superficial and splenius capitis and semispinalis capitis deeper, flanking the midline over the upper cervical vertebrae. Nerve pathways track laterally through the neck, consistent with cervical plexus branches and proximal elements of the brachial plexus as they emerge between the scalene muscles and pass toward the shoulder girdle. Posterior head and neck views are where learners often struggle to integrate surface landmarks with the deeper neurovascular anatomy that governs headache patterns, cervical radiculopathy, and perioperative risk. The relationship of occipital scalp vessels to the suboccipital musculature and greater occipital nerve territory supports teaching occipital neuralgia and common trigger points along the superior nuchal line. Long posterior muscular columns also clarify why whiplash and extension injuries can produce pain that radiates superiorly, even when imaging focuses on the cervical spine. Neuroanatomy and gross anatomy courses can use this plate to pair posterior surface anatomy with intracranial circulation and cervical nerve distribution, and it also fits well in chapters on posterior approaches for cervical decompression or suboccipital craniotomy planning. Medical publishers will find it useful as a contextual figure for headaches, cervical plexus blocks, and posterior neck dissection steps.
