Description
Seen from a posterior perspective through partially transparent integument, the thoracic and abdominal viscera are arranged around the axial skeleton, with the scapulae framing the posterior thoracic wall and the vertebral column forming the midline landmark from cervical to lumbar levels. Bilateral lungs occupy the pleural cavities lateral to the mediastinum, while the esophagus tracks inferiorly along the posterior mediastinum toward the stomach, which sits in the left upper quadrant deep to the left costal margin. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver fills the right upper quadrant, and the small intestine coils centrally with the colon forming a peripheral frame, its ascending and descending segments lying more posterolateral than the jejunoileal loops. Pelvic viscera may be faintly suggested below the sacral promontory, but the emphasis remains on gastrointestinal and respiratory anatomy. Posterior renderings like this matter when teaching how the lungs and mediastinum relate to the vertebral bodies, a relationship that drives both auscultation landmarks and imaging interpretation on lateral chest radiographs and thoracic CT reconstructions.
