Anterior neck viscera are centered on the larynx and cervical trachea, with the thyroid gland draped anterolaterally and its isthmus crossing the upper tracheal rings. Superiorly, the hyoid region frames the laryngeal inlet, while the pharynx and cervical esophagus course posterior to the airway toward the thoracic inlet. Laterally, the carotid sheath bundles the common carotid artery (bifurcating to internal and external carotids), internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve, with superficial venous tributaries and a dense cervical lymphatic network tracking along the sternocleidomastoid and toward the supraclavicular fossa. Surgical anatomy in the female neck often hinges on these relationships because access corridors are narrow and neurovascular consequences are immediate: thyroidectomy and parathyroid exploration demand a clean mental map of the superior thyroid vessels near the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve and the recurrent laryngeal nerve in the tracheoesophageal groove. The same midline interval between infrahyoid musculature and the thyroid isthmus guides emergency tracheostomy placement, where high entry risks cricoid injury and low entry approaches the brachiocephalic vessels.
