Description
Sweeping across the posterior pelvis, the animation isolates the outer lip (labium externum) of the iliac crest along the superior border of the iliac ala (wing), from the posterior superior iliac spine toward the iliac tubercle. The thickened cortical ridge is shown in relief against the lateral surface of the ilium, with adjacent landmarks briefly coming into view, including the posterior superior and posterior inferior iliac spines, the posterior gluteal line, and the dorsal surface of the sacrum and sacroiliac region. As the camera pans and subtly rotates, the lateral-to-medial contour of the crest becomes clear and the changing profile of the outer lip is easier to appreciate than in a single still. Orientation to the iliac crest is not academic trivia. The posterior crest and PSIS region are palpation targets for posterior pelvic pain syndromes and a frequent reference point for sacroiliac joint injections, while the lateral crest guides placement and angulation of iliac crest bone graft harvest and fixation corridors in pelvic trauma surgery. Motion through the posterior view also clarifies why the outer lip is a reliable attachment line for the gluteal fascia and portions of gluteus maximus, and how that relationship influences incision planning and retraction. Use this animation in gross anatomy teaching of the hip bone, osteology labs focusing on iliac crest landmarks, and surgical education modules on posterior iliac crest grafting, SI joint approaches, and posterior pelvic exposure in orthopaedics. It also fits well in radiology or physical examination content that pairs surface anatomy of the PSIS dimples with underlying bony anatomy. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
