Description
Along the lateral neck of an adult male, the sternocleidomastoid dominates the surface anatomy as it runs obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, forming the key boundary between the anterior cervical region and the posterior cervical region. Posterior to it, the trapezius defines the posterolateral contour as it descends toward the shoulder girdle, with the interval between these muscles corresponding to the posterior triangle of the neck. Superiorly the mandibular margin and mastoid region frame the upper cervical surface, while inferiorly the clavicle and suprasternal area anchor the lower limits; the external jugular vein and superficial cervical fascia commonly track over the sternocleidomastoid in this territory. Surface relationships in the lateral neck matter because they guide safe access to deeper neurovascular structures long before the fascia is opened. The posterior border of sternocleidomastoid is the classic landmark for the emergence of the cervical plexus (Erb point), a high-yield location for regional anesthesia and a frequent site of iatrogenic nerve injury during lymph node biopsy. This same topography helps clinicians anticipate where the accessory nerve crosses the posterior triangle on its way to trapezius, a predictable vulnerability in selective neck dissections.
