Description
Parietal lobes occupy the dorsal aspect of both cerebral hemispheres in this superior view, separated along the midline by the longitudinal fissure. The postcentral gyrus sits immediately posterior to the central sulcus, while the superior parietal lobule extends posteriorly toward the parieto-occipital region, divided from the inferior parietal lobule by the intraparietal sulcus. Medially, the dorsal surface approaches the precuneus and paracentral lobule near the interhemispheric fissure, emphasizing how sensorimotor and association cortex border one another across short gyral distances. Damage here is never abstract. A cortical infarct in the middle cerebral artery territory can involve the postcentral gyrus and produce contralateral hemisensory loss, while more posterior involvement of the inferior parietal lobule on the dominant side aligns with Gerstmann syndrome (agraphia, acalculia, finger agnosia, left-right disorientation) and on the nondominant side with hemispatial neglect. Superior viewing also helps clarify surgical orientation: the midline relationship to falx cerebri and superior sagittal sinus is implicit, and the sulcal pattern provides surface landmarks used when planning parasagittal craniotomies or interpreting tumor mass effect that effaces the intraparietal sulcus.
