Description

Framed in lateral skull view, the animation isolates the parietal margin of the greater wing of the sphenoid, the serrated superior border that meets the sphenoid angle of the parietal bone at the pterion. As the camera tracks along the margin from anterior to posterior, the jagged suture surface reads clearly against the smoother temporal surface of the greater wing lying inferior to it. Bony relationships are kept in true anatomical position, with the margin running superiorly and slightly posteriorly as it approaches its articulation with the parietal. Pterion anatomy matters because it concentrates multiple thin calvarial elements over the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery, a classic site where a lateral blow can produce an epidural hematoma. A static image often flattens the suture geography, but the sequential sweep along the parietal margin makes the interdigitations and their adjacency to the temporal fossa easier to parse, which helps when teaching skull fracture lines, burr hole placement landmarks, or why spheno-parietal suture variants change the look of the region. Small differences here matter. They change surface landmarks. Use this clip in gross anatomy lab orientation, osteology modules, neurosurgery and emergency medicine teaching on epidural hematoma mechanisms, and as a figure adjunct for atlases discussing cranial sutures, pterion variants, and lateral skull surface anatomy. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
