Pectoral Region of the Thorax

Description

Anterior surface anatomy of the female thorax is presented in anatomical position, with the pectoral region centered on the sternum and extending laterally toward the anterior axillary folds. Superficial landmarks include the clavicles superiorly, the manubrium and sternal body along the midline, and the contours of pectoralis major spanning from the clavicle and sternum toward its humeral insertion. Both lungs are indicated within the thoracic cavity, their apices projecting superior to the first ribs and their anterior borders lying deep to the costal cartilages on either side of the sternum. Breast tissue overlies the pectoral fascia and pectoralis major, with the nipple-areolar complex positioned on the anterior chest wall. Clear and direct. Clinically, this combination of external pectoral anatomy and internal lung position supports teaching surface landmarks used in cardiopulmonary exam and procedural planning, because the relationship of breast, pectoralis major, ribs, and pleura determines where you can safely auscultate, percuss, or enter the chest. Chest tube placement and needle decompression depend on keeping to the superior margin of a rib to avoid the intercostal neurovascular bundle and on anticipating where the lung edge and pleural recess sit beneath the anterior and lateral chest wall. Breast surgery also starts here, since mastectomy and implant pockets are created relative to the pectoralis major and its fascia, and axillary dissection follows the lateral border of the pectoral region toward the axillary tail of the breast.
