Description
Positioned within the posterior knee, the popliteal lymph nodes sit deep in the popliteal fossa, closely related to the posterior aspect of the distal femur and the proximal tibia. With the muscular layers removed, the nodes can be appreciated in the fat of the fossa near the popliteal vessels, typically posterolateral to the popliteal artery and vein as they traverse toward the adductor hiatus superiorly and the posterior leg inferiorly. The tibial nerve and common fibular (peroneal) nerve frame this space, with the tibial nerve remaining more midline and the common fibular nerve tracking laterally toward the fibular head. Blue-rendered internal derangements of the knee, including the cruciate ligaments and menisci, provide joint context deep to the fossa. Deep anatomy, clearly. Popliteal nodes matter because they are the first echelon lymphatic filter for much of the lateral foot, heel, and posterior leg, receiving collecting vessels that run with the small saphenous vein and deep lymphatics that accompany the popliteal artery. Reactive popliteal lymphadenopathy can follow plantar skin infection or calf cellulitis, and they are a known waystation in lymphatic spread from distal lower-limb melanoma, which is why posterior knee palpation and targeted ultrasound sometimes change staging. For surgeons working posteriorly, their proximity to the popliteal neurovascular bundle makes nodal sampling or dissection an exercise in careful spatial judgment. Use this plate in lower-limb anatomy teaching to link lymphatic drainage to the popliteal fossa contents, or in clinical education on melanoma staging pathways, lymphadenitis, and posterior knee surgical approaches.
