Description
Posterior to the right knee, the popliteal fossa is framed superiorly by the biceps femoris laterally and the semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially, then inferiorly by the medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius, with the plantaris tendon often tracking along the lateral margin. Deep to this diamond-shaped interval lie the distal femur, posterior capsule of the knee joint, and proximal tibia and fibula (the fibular head sits inferolateral), even though the patella (kneecap) itself is anterior and not in the direct line of sight. A blue band localizes the region overlying these structures on an adult Black male figure in posterior view. Orientation is clear. Clinically, this is the corridor for the popliteal artery and vein, the tibial nerve, and the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it courses toward the fibular neck, and it is one of the few places you can correlate a surface region to a compact stack of vascular and neural elements. Popliteal artery aneurysm and entrapment syndrome present here, and a Baker cyst commonly expands from the posteromedial knee between semimembranosus and the medial head of gastrocnemius, mimicking deep vein thrombosis with calf swelling.
