Description
Posterior arm surface anatomy is centered on the triceps brachii, with the long head forming a medial posterior contour from the infraglenoid region toward the olecranon and the lateral head shaping the posterolateral brachium. Proximally, the posterior axillary fold is continuous with the long head of triceps and latissimus dorsi, while distally the muscle converges into the triceps tendon inserting on the olecranon of the ulna. Along the lateral border of the distal arm, the brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis longus begin to emerge as the anatomy transitions toward the posterior forearm. Clear landmarks. Palpating and teaching the posterior arm benefits from this back view because it aligns the muscle bellies with common clinical corridors. The radial nerve courses in the radial groove on the posterior humerus between the medial and lateral heads of triceps, a relationship that explains the classic risk of neuropraxia with midshaft humeral fractures and with prolonged compression (so-called Saturday night palsy).
