Description
Presented as an isolated conceptus without the placenta, the first trimester fetus is shown with a disproportionately large head flexed toward the thorax and a trunk that is beginning to lengthen. Upper and lower limb buds have progressed to recognizable arms and legs, with developing hands and feet positioned anterior to the body and digits separating distally. Facial contours are becoming discernible on the anterior aspect of the head, while the ventral abdominal wall includes the umbilical attachment site, even if the umbilical cord itself is only subtly indicated. Proportions are the story here. Removing the placenta focuses attention on embryologic morphology rather than placental anatomy, which is useful when teaching crown-rump growth, limb rotation, and the head-to-body ratio characteristic of roughly gestational week 10 through early week 12. This is also the window when physiologic midgut herniation and early umbilical ring development can be discussed in a precise way, setting up later contrasts with omphalocele and gastroschisis on prenatal ultrasound.
