Description
Centered on the anterior thigh, the rectus femoris runs superficially along the midline of the quadriceps femoris, positioned between vastus lateralis laterally and vastus medialis medially as it descends toward the patella. Proximally, its straight head arises from the anterior inferior iliac spine and its reflected head from the supraacetabular groove, placing the muscle belly anterior to the hip joint capsule and femoral head. Distally, the fibers converge into the quadriceps tendon, continuing over the anterior aspect of the knee to the patella and, via the patellar ligament, to the tibial tuberosity. Rectus femoris is biarticular. That biarticular anatomy is why an anterior view matters in both teaching and clinic: rectus femoris contributes to hip flexion and knee extension, and it is the quadriceps head most exposed to lengthening loads during sprinting and kicking, where myotendinous junction strains are common. Proximal tendon pathology and apophyseal avulsion from the AIIS in adolescent athletes are best understood when you can trace the muscle’s line of pull from pelvis to patella. The same spatial relationships guide safe needle placement for EMG or botulinum toxin injection, keeping you anterior to the femur and away from the femoral neurovascular bundle in the femoral triangle.
