Description
Centered on the body of the sphenoid, the sella turcica comes into view from a posterior vantage, with the hypophyseal (pituitary) fossa lying anterior to the square dorsum sellae. The dorsum sellae rises superiorly as a bony plate, capped bilaterally by the posterior clinoid processes, which project superolaterally toward the tentorial attachments. As the animation progresses, subtle camera movement clarifies the depth of the sellar depression relative to the posterior wall and emphasizes the medial position of the sella within the central skull base. Sellar anatomy is not an academic nicety. Pituitary macroadenomas expand the hypophyseal fossa and can erode the dorsum sellae, while parasellar lesions alter the relationship between the posterior clinoids, the cavernous sinus region laterally, and the clivus posteriorly. Sequence matters here: a posterior perspective makes it easier to teach how the dorsum sellae forms the posterior boundary of transsphenoidal corridors and why the posterior clinoid processes can become operative landmarks or obstacles during extended endonasal approaches to the retrochiasmatic and interpeduncular cisterns. Small structures. Real surgical consequences. Use this clip in neuroanatomy and skull base modules to orient learners to midline sphenoid landmarks, or in radiology teaching to correlate sellar contour changes on lateral skull radiographs, CT bone windows, and midsagittal MRI. It also fits well in neurosurgery and ENT education when introducing transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, dorsum sellae drilling, and posterior clinoidectomy concepts.
