Description
Anterior neck anatomy is rendered with the overlying lower face, mandible, and cervical integument maintained while the anterior soft tissues are made translucent to expose the cervical spine. The atlas (C1) sits immediately inferior to the occipital region and cradles the dens of the axis (C2), with the remaining cervical vertebral bodies (C3 to C7) stacked inferiorly in the midline and separated by intervertebral discs. Uncovertebral margins and the facet (zygapophysial) joints are suggested laterally, defining the typical cervical contour from superior to inferior. Fine skin texture and natural tone anchor the skeletal landmarks to a living anterior neck. A frontal orientation like this clarifies how little tissue separates the anterior neck from the vertebral column once the airway and visceral compartment are conceptually removed, a point that matters when teaching both mechanism and consequence of cervical hyperflexion and hyperextension injury. The C1 to C2 complex deserves special attention: atlanto-axial instability, dens fractures, and rotational subluxation sit at the intersection of anatomy and emergency imaging, and this view helps correlate the dens with the ring of the atlas and adjacent articular surfaces. Small joints, big consequences.
