Description
Centered on the dorsum of the foot and anterior ankle, this view places the metatarsals and toe extensor tendons superficial and palpable beneath the skin, with the tendon slips running distally toward the dorsal digital expansions. Proximally, the tendons of tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, and extensor digitorum longus converge toward the ankle where they pass deep to the superior and inferior extensor retinacula. Blue athletic or kinesiology tape overlies the dorsal midfoot and extends toward the anterior aspect of the arch, crossing a region where the dorsalis pedis artery and deep fibular (peroneal) nerve travel between extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus. Skin tone contrast makes tape edges and alignment easy to read. Dorsal foot anatomy matters because many high-frequency pain generators sit just under the skin, and tape placement can either offload them or irritate them. Extensor tendinopathy often presents as pain along the dorsum after running or tight lacing, and the tendons are commonly stressed when the ankle is held in repeated dorsiflexion. Misplaced compression at the anterior ankle can also provoke deep fibular nerve symptoms (dorsal first web space paresthesia) while leaving ankle or midfoot mechanics unchanged.
