Highlighted in blue, the scalp (epicranium) spans from the supraorbital margins and glabella anteriorly over the vertex toward the external occipital protuberance and superior nuchal lines posteriorly, blending laterally into the temporal region above the auricles. Surface landmarks implied by the underlying calvaria include the frontal bone, paired parietal bones, and occipital bone, with the sagittal midline separating left and right hemispheric contours. Anterior facial features remain visible for orientation, but the emphasis stays on the soft tissue envelope overlying the cranial vault. Clear midline geography. For teaching and procedure planning, isolating the epicranium helps you think in layers: skin, dense connective tissue, galea aponeurotica (epicranial aponeurosis), loose areolar tissue, and pericranium, a sequence that explains why scalp lacerations can gape widely when the galea is violated. This region also anchors common bedside and operative decisions, from placement of neurosurgical skin incisions (coronal, question mark, or linear parietal approaches) to the expected spread of blood in a subgaleal hematoma versus a more superficial hematoma. Regional anesthesia fits naturally here, since the sensory supply from the supraorbital and supratrochlear nerves anteriorly and the greater and lesser occipital nerves posteriorly maps cleanly onto the highlighted territory for scalp blocks.
