Situated inferior to the body of the mandible, the submandibular triangle is bounded anteriorly by the anterior belly of the digastric muscle, posteriorly by the posterior belly of the digastric and stylohyoid, and inferiorly by the intermediate tendon as it approaches the hyoid. A lateral viewpoint typically brings the submandibular gland into profile deep to the platysma and superficial layer of deep cervical fascia, with the facial artery coursing along the posterior margin of the gland and then hooking onto the inferior border of the mandible. Posterior to the triangle, the angle of the mandible and upper sternocleidomastoid help orient the region, while the mylohyoid forms the muscular floor deep to the gland. Clean landmarks. Surgeons and dentists care about this triangle because it is the corridor used for submandibular gland excision and for approaches to submandibular space infection (including odontogenic spread from mandibular molars), where fascial planes dictate whether swelling remains localized or tracks into the submental and parapharyngeal spaces. The lateral relationship of the gland to the mandible and digastric bellies also frames common examination targets: tender gland enlargement, sialolithiasis near the hilum, and palpable level IB lymph nodes that may enlarge in oral cavity malignancy.
