Description
Shown in lateral aspect, the cerebral hemisphere exposes the temporal lobe inferior to the lateral sulcus, with the superior, middle, and inferior temporal gyri running anteroposteriorly along the convexity. The sulcus temporalis inferior (inferior temporal sulcus) is traced between the middle temporal gyrus superiorly and the inferior temporal gyrus inferiorly, continuing posteriorly toward the temporo-occipital junction. Superior and anterior to this region, parts of the frontal and parietal lobes remain visible across the Sylvian fissure, while posteroinferiorly the cerebellar hemisphere and a portion of the brainstem sit beneath the occipital pole. A blue line marks the sulcal course as a surface landmark on cortex. Lateral temporal sulci matter because they anchor how you divide temporal association cortex when teaching functional neuroanatomy and when correlating lesions to clinical syndromes. The inferior temporal gyrus and adjacent sulci are routinely discussed in relation to ventral visual processing and object recognition, and they lie near cortical regions targeted in epilepsy evaluations when seizure onset involves the lateral and basal temporal networks. Sulcal variability is common here. That variability can mislead surface-based localization if you do not keep the superior temporal sulcus and lateral (Sylvian) fissure in the same mental map.
