Arising from the junction of pedicle and lamina, the superior articular process of a lumbar vertebra projects superiorly and slightly medially, ending in the superior articular facet that faces posteromedially toward the vertebral canal. From a superior perspective, the animation tracks the gently concave to planar facet surface and its rim as it rotates relative to the paired process on the opposite side, keeping the spinous process posterior and the vertebral body anterior as fixed landmarks. Small shifts in angle clarify how the right and left zygapophyseal (facet) joints sit posterior to the intervertebral disc and lateral to the lamina, forming the posterior elements of the motion segment.
