Description

Sweeping along the superolateral surface of the frontal lobe, the superior frontal gyrus is traced in lateral view from the frontal pole posteriorly toward the precentral region. The animation clarifies its boundaries as the superior frontal sulcus runs inferiorly and the longitudinal fissure (interhemispheric fissure) sits just medial to the gyrus along the superior margin of the cerebral hemisphere. As the camera holds the lateral perspective, the neighboring middle frontal gyrus remains inferior, while the central sulcus and precentral sulcus appear posterior landmarks that help orient the viewer to the anterior cerebral cortex. Teaching the superior frontal gyrus benefits from motion because learners routinely confuse lateral surface gyri with the medial frontal cortex and with the precentral gyrus, which contains primary motor cortex. Small spatial errors matter. Neurosurgical planning for frontal craniotomy corridors, as well as neuroradiology discussions of frontal lobe gliomas and traumatic contusions, often rely on confident identification of gyral anatomy relative to the central sulcus and the superior frontal sulcus; the animated progression makes those relationships stick in a way a single frame rarely does. Use this animation in neuroanatomy and neuroscience teaching blocks when introducing lobar topography, gyral and sulcal naming conventions, and surface landmarks used to localize lesions on CT or MRI. It also fits well in neurosurgery and neurology slide decks that need a clean lateral cortex reference for preoperative mapping discussions and clinic handouts about frontal lobe function. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
