Description

Running from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus, the axillary nerve curves laterally and posteriorly around the surgical neck of the humerus, then gives off the superior lateral brachial cutaneous nerve to the skin over the deltoid cap. An anterior perspective also places the clavicle and scapula superiorly, the glenohumeral joint laterally, and the humerus descending distal to the shoulder toward the elbow, with the radius lateral and ulna medial in the forearm. Major terminal branches, the median nerve in the anterior arm and forearm, the ulnar nerve passing medially toward the cubital tunnel region, and the radial nerve traveling toward the lateral forearm and dorsum of the hand, provide a clear orientation against the bony framework. Cutaneous territory is the point. Surface sensory mapping over the lateral shoulder is not trivia; it is where you confirm axillary nerve integrity after an anterior shoulder dislocation or a proximal humeral fracture at the surgical neck, and it is the area that often goes numb first. Deltoid injections also matter here, because a needle placed too superiorly or too posteriorly can irritate the axillary nerve as it traverses the quadrangular space with the posterior circumflex humeral artery. For teaching, this view connects a named cutaneous branch to its parent nerve and to the landmark that clinicians palpate.
