Description
Supramarginal gyrus crowns the inferior parietal lobule at the temporoparietal junction, wrapping around the posterior end of the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure) where the temporal lobe meets the parietal lobe. From a posterior viewpoint, its convex cortical ridge lies superior to the posterior superior temporal gyrus and anterior to the angular gyrus, with the postcentral gyrus positioned more anteriorly on the lateral surface. Medially, the supramarginal gyrus relates to the intraparietal sulcus separating inferior and superior parietal lobules, while its lateral surface forms part of the perisylvian cortex. A key border zone. Clinically, the supramarginal gyrus (classically Brodmann area 40) is a lesion-localization workhorse for language and praxis: dominant-hemisphere injury can produce conduction aphasia with impaired repetition and phonological errors, and can contribute to apraxia when the temporoparietal association cortex is disrupted. On the nondominant side, damage near the supramarginal gyrus and adjacent temporoparietal junction is often implicated in hemispatial neglect and attentional network deficits after right middle cerebral artery infarction. Because the perspective is posterior, the illustration helps separate the supramarginal gyrus from the neighboring angular gyrus by showing their relative positions around the posterior superior temporal sulcus and the posterior termination of the lateral sulcus, a distinction that matters when correlating cortical geography with aphasia syndromes, tumor margins, or epileptogenic zones.
