Seen in lateral profile, the external nose is isolated in blue against the surrounding facial soft tissues, outlining the dorsum nasi from nasion to tip, the alae nasi forming the lateral nasal walls, and the nares (nostrils) at the inferior margin of the nasal vestibule. The columella sits inferior to the nasal tip and separates the right and left nostrils, while the nasal septum forms the medial partition immediately deep to the vestibular opening. Superiorly, the nasal bridge blends into the frontal region, and posteriorly the nasal root lies anterior to the orbit and maxilla. Clean surface landmarks. A side profile is the working view for most clinical discussions of nasal shape because it maps readily onto the underlying osseocartilaginous framework, the nasal bones superiorly and the upper and lower lateral cartilages and septal cartilage more anterior and inferior. This perspective supports preoperative planning for rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty, where dorsal hump reduction, tip projection, and alar support are assessed relative to the face, and it also helps teach why trauma can produce saddle-nose deformity when septal support is compromised. Color-coding keeps attention on the nose while preserving facial proportions.
