Oriented in a superior view, the animation centers on the anterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone as it contributes to the floor of the middle cranial fossa. The petrous ridge rises obliquely from posterolateral to anteromedial, separating the middle cranial fossa from the posterior cranial fossa, while the tegmen tympani spans laterally as the thin bony roof of the tympanic cavity and mastoid antrum. Along the anteromedial petrous apex, the sequence tracks the trigeminal impression (Meckel’s cave region) and the groove for the greater petrosal nerve approaching the hiatus and running anteromedially toward the foramen lacerum. A short rotation and close-in move clarifies how these landmarks sit relative to the sella region and clivus just medial and posterior to the petrous apex. For skull base teaching, the anterior petrous surface is where names stop being abstract and start predicting symptoms. Herpes zoster oticus and petrous apicitis can involve the greater superficial petrosal nerve and adjacent petrous apex, while middle fossa extradural approaches rely on finding the arcuate eminence and the hiatus to orient to the internal acoustic meatus and labyrinth deep within the petrous pyramid.
