Description
Temporal lobe cortex occupies the inferolateral aspect of the cerebral hemisphere, extending from the temporal pole anteriorly to the posterior temporal region beneath the parietal and occipital lobes. Clinically, this region anchors several high-yield correlations: the superior temporal plane contains primary auditory cortex, and the posterior superior temporal gyrus in the dominant hemisphere corresponds to Wernicke area, where infarction in the inferior division of the middle cerebral artery can produce fluent aphasia with impaired comprehension. Uncal and parahippocampal structures on the medial temporal lobe sit just medial and inferior to the lateral surface, a relationship that matters when teaching uncal herniation and ipsilateral third-nerve compression.
