Temporal Region

Description

Framed in an anterior facial view, the temporal (temple) region is marked bilaterally over the lateral forehead and upper cheek, overlying the temporal fossa on the squamous temporal bone and adjacent parietal bone. Superiorly, the region corresponds to the temporal lines on the parietal bone; inferiorly it approaches the zygomatic arch, with the lateral orbital rim and frontozygomatic area forming an anterior boundary. Blue surface markers emphasize the soft tissue window where the temporalis muscle lies deep to the temporal fascia, and where the superficial temporal artery and vein ascend just anterior to the auricle toward the scalp. Bilateral symmetry is clear. Temporal surface anatomy matters because this is a crowded corridor for neurovascular structures and a frequent entry point for procedures. Palpation and Doppler localization of the superficial temporal artery, typically just anterior to the tragus and then superiorly across the temple, guides temporal artery biopsy and helps evaluate suspected giant cell arteritis presenting with scalp tenderness, jaw claudication, or sudden visual symptoms. It is also a common site of blunt trauma where thin bone at the pterion overlies the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery, a practical teaching point when discussing epidural hematoma patterns and why temporal impacts can deteriorate quickly.
