Description
Sphenoid greater wing anatomy comes into focus on the temporal surface, the smooth, laterally facing plate that forms part of the floor and lateral wall of the temporal fossa. Superiorly and anteriorly, this surface approaches the region of the pterion where the greater wing meets the frontal and parietal bones, while its posterior margin relates to the squamous temporal bone. Inferiorly, the temporal surface is bounded by the infratemporal crest, a sharp ridge separating it from the infratemporal surface that contributes to the roof of the infratemporal fossa. Smooth cortex dominates. Across the lateral skull, this area matters because it anchors key teaching and surgical landmarks: the temporalis muscle originates from the temporal fossa and passes deep to the zygomatic arch, and the greater wing is one of the four bones converging at the pterion. A thin pterional region is clinically paired with the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery on the internal aspect of the calvaria, so fractures here can produce an epidural hematoma and are a standard correlation in head trauma instruction. The fixed perspective on a single bony surface also helps isolate the greater wing from nearby foramina that often distract learners, such as foramen ovale and foramen spinosum, which sit on the infratemporal surface rather than the temporal surface proper.
