Description
Posterior topography of cutaneous innervation is mapped across an adult female figure, with color blocks corresponding to spinal dermatomes over the scalp and neck, posterior trunk, upper limbs, gluteal region, and lower limbs. Cervical territories occupy the posterior neck and shoulder cap, thoracic segments run in stacked bands across the back, and lumbar to sacral distributions sweep over the buttock, posterior thigh, calf, and heel in an inferior progression. Upper-limb fields extend from the deltoid region distally along the posterior arm and forearm toward the hand and digits, with boundaries placed to emphasize segmental change rather than peripheral nerve course. One side remains uncolored as a visual control. Dermatomal mapping matters when you need to localize a lesion to a nerve root rather than to a named peripheral nerve, and the posterior view is where that distinction often becomes clinically obvious. Radicular pain from cervical or lumbosacral disc herniation, herpes zoster in a thoracic dermatome, and sensory level testing in suspected spinal cord compression all rely on recognizing these segmental skin territories and their typical overlap. Quick orientation to sacral sparing over the perineal and posterior lower-limb regions can change urgency in cauda equina syndrome workups. Pattern recognition, not memorization, is the point.
