Description
Rendered with a transparent, radiographic-style effect, the anterior maxilla is visible with the left maxillary cuspid (canine) highlighted, its crown centered in the dental arch between the lateral incisor medially and the first premolar laterally. The canine’s single pointed cusp tip and prominent labial surface are paired with a long, conical root that extends superiorly toward the canine fossa. Behind the dentoalveolar process, the maxillary sinuses occupy the body of the maxilla on either side of the nasal aperture, allowing you to appreciate their inferior floor in relation to the apices of adjacent teeth. For dental anatomy teaching, the maxillary canine is a reference tooth: it defines the canine eminence, supports the upper lip, and contributes to canine guidance during lateral excursions. The anterior view also helps explain why periapical pathology or endodontic working length in the canine can be discussed in the same breath as the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus, even though sinus proximity is typically closer for posterior roots. A long root in dense anterior maxillary bone changes the feel of local infiltration and the mechanics of extraction. Short and stout? Never.
