Description

Rotating into a true lateral orientation, the thoracic vertebra’s transverse process projects posterolaterally from the vertebral arch, sitting posterior to the vertebral body and lateral to the pedicle and lamina. The rounded tip of the process comes into focus, where the transverse costal facet lies on its anterior aspect and aligns with the tubercle of the corresponding rib. As the sequence advances, the costotransverse relationship reads clearly: rib tubercle laterally, facet medially, with the interposed costotransverse joint plane oriented obliquely. Costotransverse articulation is a key landmark when you are teaching thoracic cage mechanics and segmental motion, because it constrains rib elevation and depression and helps define the pump-handle versus bucket-handle patterns of respiration. Degenerative change at this joint can mimic posterior chest wall pain and is a recognized generator of focal tenderness near the transverse processes, while fractures of transverse processes often signal significant rotational or lateral flexion forces. Animation makes the joint geometry legible by letting the viewer track how the rib tubercle seats onto the facet during small positional changes, something that is easy to miss in a single still. Use this clip in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal courses when introducing thoracic vertebral features, in radiology teaching files to orient learners on oblique CT or lateral fluoroscopic projections, and in spine surgery or interventional pain modules where transverse process landmarks guide thoracic medial branch or costotransverse joint injections.
