Centered on the posterior trunk, the paired blue markers localize the lumbar triangles of the flank (loin) on either side of the midline, positioned lateral to the lumbar spinous processes and superior to the iliac crests. Inferiorly, the triangle of Petit is bounded by latissimus dorsi posteriorly and external oblique anteriorly, with the iliac crest forming its base, while the superior lumbar triangle (Grynfeltt-Lesshaft) sits more cranially beneath the 12th rib, where internal oblique and quadratus lumborum contribute to the floor deep to the superficial fascia and overlying skin. Muscular contours of the dorsal trunk frame these landmarks in anatomical position with the arms resting at the sides. Clear surface anatomy. Lumbar triangles matter because they map zones of relative weakness in the posterolateral abdominal wall, where lumbar hernias (Petit inferiorly, Grynfeltt superiorly) can protrude and be mistaken clinically for lipoma or a flank hematoma.
