Presented in lateral profile, the thorax is defined by the rib cage with ribs curving posteriorly toward the thoracic spine and anteriorly toward the sternum via costal cartilages, while the clavicle and shoulder girdle contour mark the superior boundary of the chest. Along the lateral chest wall, the serratus anterior digitations and intercostal spaces sit superficial to the ribs, blending inferiorly with the external oblique as the trunk transitions toward the costal margin. The breast contour overlies the pectoralis major anteriorly, and the posterior axillary fold suggests the latissimus dorsi sweeping toward the humerus. Neutral standing posture clarifies surface landmarks. A clean lateral view matters when you need to judge chest wall shape and proportional relationships, including the spectrum of pectus deformities (pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum) that alter the anterior thoracic contour but also change the apparent curvature and spacing of the ribs.
