Description
Centered on the os coxae of an adult female, the illustration brings the ilium, ischium, and pubis into clear relationship around the acetabulum, where each bone contributes to the lunate surface of the hip socket. Superiorly, the iliac crests arc laterally from the sacroiliac regions, while inferiorly the ischial tuberosities sit posteroinferior to the pubic bodies and their anterior pubic symphysis. Proximal femora are included, with the femoral heads positioned medial to the greater trochanters and seated within the acetabula. A segment of the lumbar spine and lower rib cage frames the pelvis above. Female pelvic morphology matters because it changes bony landmarks used in both obstetrics and orthopaedics: a wider subpubic angle, broader pelvic inlet, and a more laterally flared ilium alter the working space for the fetal head and shift how you estimate pelvic dimensions on radiographs and CT. Hip pain workups also depend on recognizing acetabular coverage and version, since developmental dysplasia of the hip, acetabular retroversion (pincer-type femoroacetabular impingement), and osteoarthritis all tie back to the geometry of the acetabulum relative to the femoral head.
