Description

Anteriorly broad and kidney-shaped, the lumbar vertebral body is presented from a superior perspective, with its superior endplate forming a flat load-bearing platform for the adjacent intervertebral disc. Subtle contour changes across the endplate surface imply the peripheral apophyseal rim and the more central region that overlies the vertebral body’s trabecular bone. As the animation progresses, the superior surface is held steady while depth cues clarify how the disc footprint sits concentrically over the endplate rather than extending beyond the bony margin. Orientation remains in anatomical position, with anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral borders clearly differentiated. Endplate anatomy is not academic trivia in the lumbar spine. Defects of the cartilaginous endplate and adjacent subchondral bone are implicated in Schmorl nodes, and Modic endplate changes on MRI correlate with disc degeneration and low back pain in many clinical series. Motion adds clarity: by sequentially emphasizing the endplate perimeter and central surface, the animation helps explain why axial compressive load concentrates near the annulus fibrosus attachment at the ring apophysis, while the nucleus pulposus transmits pressure to the central endplate. Use it in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules when introducing the lumbar motion segment, or in radiology teaching to correlate superior endplate morphology with sagittal and axial MR appearances of degenerative disc disease. It also fits spine surgery education when discussing endplate preservation during lumbar interbody fusion and why violation of the subchondral endplate increases cage subsidence risk. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
