Description
Centered in the posterior neck, the seven cervical vertebrae (C1 to C7) are highlighted against the rest of the vertebral column, with the spinous processes aligned in the midline from the axis inferiorly toward the cervicothoracic junction. Superiorly, the cervical segment sits immediately inferior to the occipital bone, while inferiorly it transitions into the upper thoracic spine beneath the first ribs and scapular girdle. From this rear perspective, the laminae converge on the spinous processes, and the paired transverse processes project laterally, framing the vertebral canal that houses the cervical enlargement of the spinal cord. Surrounding skeletal landmarks, including the posterior calvaria, ribs, pelvis, and long bones of the limbs, provide whole-body orientation for the neck region. Posterior cervical anatomy matters because many interventions and injuries declare themselves on the back of the neck. Palpation of the midline spinous processes guides level identification for procedures such as cervical epidural access planning, and it also helps triangulate the symptomatic segment in radiculopathy when paired with dermatomal findings.
