Description
Centered on the crown (vertex) of the female head, the posterior view brings the parietal eminences into focus as they converge toward the midline sagittal suture at the most superior aspect of the calvaria. Inferior to the vertex, the contour slopes toward the occipital region, where the parietal bones meet the occipital bone along the lambdoid suture, with the external occipital protuberance positioned further inferiorly on the midline. Laterally, the superior temporal lines arc toward the parietal bones, marking the attachment zone of the temporalis fascia and helping orient left versus right when surface landmarks are all you have. Posterior access to the vertex matters when you need accurate cranial topography without facial distraction, because midline relationships guide everything from clinical examination to operative planning, and small errors in surface orientation can translate into large errors at depth. A practical example is electrode placement at Cz (10–20 system), which is referenced to the vertex and midline sutural anatomy rather than to the occiput alone.
