Description
Centered on the midface, the zygomatic (malar, jugal) region is presented in anterior view with the zygomatic bones forming the lateral prominence of each cheek beneath the inferolateral orbital rims. Inferiorly, the zygomaticomaxillary junction transitions onto the maxilla and anterior wall of the maxillary sinus, while laterally the zygomatic arch sweeps posteriorly toward the temporal bone. Medial to the malar eminence, the infraorbital area overlies the infraorbital foramen and course of the infraorbital nerve, with paired blue under-eye patches positioned just inferior to the lower eyelids. Clinically, this surface anatomy anchors assessment of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, where flattening of the malar eminence and step-offs at the infraorbital rim correlate with diplopia, trismus from impingement near the coronoid process, and hypoesthesia in the infraorbital nerve distribution. Palpation and visual comparison across the midline are standard in acute facial trauma, and this straight-on perspective supports teaching the relationship between cheekbone contour, the orbital aperture, and the infraorbital soft tissues that often bruise or swell.
