Prominently on the radial side of the anterior male palm, the thenar eminence (eminentia thenaris) forms the muscular pad at the base of the thumb, lying lateral to the central palmar aponeurosis and superficial to the first metacarpal. Contours correspond to the abductor pollicis brevis laterally, the flexor pollicis brevis more centrally, and the adductor pollicis bulk appearing deeper and more ulnar as it draws the thumb toward the palm. Distally, the eminence tapers toward the metacarpophalangeal region of digit I, with the thumb projecting laterally in anatomical position. Clear surface anatomy. Thenar topography matters because subtle flattening, asymmetry, or loss of definition often tracks true motor denervation of median nerve recurrent branch fibers, a classic finding in carpal tunnel syndrome and in more proximal median neuropathy.
