Description
Seen in transverse section, the right atrium opens toward the right atrioventricular orifice, and the smooth vestibule of the tricuspid valve occupies the anteroinferior portion of the atrial cavity immediately proximal to the valve. Superior and posterior to this smooth zone, the atrial wall typically transitions toward pectinate musculature in the right atrial appendage, while the interatrial septum lies medially and the free wall of the right atrium remains lateral. Across the orifice, the tricuspid valve leaflets form the boundary with the right ventricle, where trabeculae carneae and papillary muscle bases may enter the section depending on the level. Orientation is clear. This slice matters because the right atrioventricular vestibule is a reliable landmark for the tricuspid annulus, the fibrous ring that becomes the reference for echocardiographic measurements and for surgical and transcatheter repair.
