Description
Rendered as an enveloped, roughly spherical flavivirus virion, the particle is organized around a central nucleocapsid containing the positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome complexed with capsid (C) protein. Surrounding this core sits the lipid bilayer envelope, from which repeating surface projections rise outward, consistent with the envelope (E) glycoprotein arranged as dimers in the mature virus and accompanied by membrane (M) protein derived from prM after furin cleavage. Spikes project radially, while the internal core remains centrally confined by the envelope. Scale matters. For yellow fever virus, these external E proteins carry the dominant neutralizing epitopes targeted by vaccine-induced antibodies, and their spatial arrangement helps explain why small conformational changes can shift the virion from attachment competent to fusion competent.
